On May 8, 2025, the world watched as white smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, signaling the election of a new pope. The announcement, “Habemus Papam,” echoed across St. Peter’s Square as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago was introduced to the world as Pope Leo XIV.
This historic moment marks the first time an American has ascended to the papacy. Pope Leo XIV brings with him a rich legacy of missionary work in Latin America and a deep understanding of the global Church. His election followed a brief conclave, a sign that the cardinals were unified in their belief that he was the right shepherd for this moment in history.
A Pope of Continuity and Unity
Pope Leo XIV steps into the shoes of Pope Francis with a clear mandate: to continue the work of outreach, compassion, and reform. His first address from the Vatican balcony emphasized themes of “building bridges” and global unity, echoing the spirit of his predecessor - Pope Francis.
